The Police Department's Patrol Division is made up four patrol squads, the Traffic Section, The Community Oriented Patrol Section, Special Response Team and K-9. The Patrol Division responded to 26,274 calls for service in 2006, which is a 0.1% decrease from 2005's 26,374. The Patrol Division arrested 2,333 people and issued 6,507 citations during 2006. The arrest and citation total of 8,441 is a 5% increase compared to 8,357 in 2005. A total of 623 roadway traffic collisions occurred in 2006. This is a 8% increase in collisions.
The patrol squads make up the "first responders" to the community when a request for service is made. Our patrol officers are dedicated to conducting thorough investigations into criminal activity. For example, one officer was able to turn a counterfeiting report into a clearance of several cases spanning across the southeastern United States. As the counterfeiting suspects were stopped on the roadway, the officer found evidence inside the vehicle of counterfeiting equipment. He later secured a search warrant of their laptop computer and found evidence of counterfeit checks issued in several states.
