Moments after the first of 10 painted boxcars was unveiled in Greer Station, the roar of a train just 50 yards away punctuated the statement of the public art project: the railroad is a key part of Greer's past.
The “Boxcars Around Town” public art project features replica fiberglass boxcars purchased by corporate sponsors and painted by Upstate artists. The decorated boxcars will be on public display for nine months, after which they will be auctioned off at a charitable event, and all proceeds will benefit Greer Relief and Resource Agency, the Greer Cultural Arts Council, and the Greer Station Association.
"This is just another piece of the puzzle in what we like to call quality of life. We think the arts are a very important part of that," Greer City Councilman Wryley Bettis said. "This is just really scratching the surface of what I think and the city thinks we can contribute to that niche."
Boxcars are scattered throughout Greer Station. Click to download a map to the locations. Printed maps are also available at Greer Station businesses.
