With two new municipal buildings more than halfway completed and nearly every department relying heavily on computer services, it was evident that the City of Greer would require an information technology professional to keep services running at peak efficiency.

The city did not have to look far to find the right individual.

Jim Ridgill of Greer began work on Jan. 2, bringing more than 20 years of experience to his new assignment as the city’s first information technology manager.

“With the new municipal construction and the city’s commitment to staying on the leading edge of technology, we knew this position was essential,” said David Seifert, director of finance and information technology for the City of Greer.  “We feel fortunate to have found someone with Jim’s background and skills — and particularly someone who already knows the Greer community.”

Ridgill will be responsible for maintaining all computer room equipment, including the city’s servers and telephone system.  Among other duties, he will oversee security features such as cameras and employee badges, and will serve as the city’s expert for computer user support.

“This is an opportunity for me to combine my past experiences in a new genre,” said Ridgill, who previously has worked in education, manufacturing, and distribution. “These are exciting times in Greer.  With the construction taking place, it’s an opportunity to get in on the ground floor.  And, being a resident of Greer, it’s nice to be close to home.”

Ridgill worked for the past two years as computer room supervisor at the Walgreen’s Distribution Center in Anderson, S.C.  He also has served as technical solutions supervisor for Emdeon Business Services in Toledo, Ohio, manager of application systems and technical resources for Lenawee Health Alliance in Adrian, Mich., and has taught computer technology at Piedmont Technical College in Greenwood, S.C. and at Sumter (S.C.) School District 17.

A Microsoft Certified Professional, Ridgill holds a master of arts degree from Siena Heights University in Adrian, Mich., a bachelor of science degree from Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C., and an associate of science degree from Sumter Area Technical College in Sumter.
