City completes LUCA project; Readies for 2010 U.S. Census
The City of Greer will complete its work this week for the the Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA) program, a decennial census geographic partnership program that will allow the United States Census Bureau to benefit from local knowledge in developing its Master Address File for the 2010 Census.
Glenn Pace, planning and zoning coordinator for the city, said staff members have been manually confirming addresses in Greer over the past three months. The goal, he said, was to deliver a concise figure that will assist Census Bureau workers attain a more complete and accurate count for the city.
“We have invested more than 600 man hours over the past twelve weeks,” Pace said. “We expect to close out the project by Friday (March 28). Census Bureau employees will then verify our work beginning in November using GPS equipped hand-held computers.”
Pace said city staff members have confirmed 11,500 addresses in Greer, including 10,200 residential addresses. He anticipates that current residential construction in the city will push the estimated current population to well over 25,000 by the time the 2010 Census is completed.
The 2006 U.S. Census estimated Greer’s population at 22,451.
