Drivers should notice a smoother ride on several roads in the City of Greer next year, City Engineer Don Holloman told Greer City County Tuesday night.
Holloman presented his annual road maintenance program report to council, including a list of Greenville and Spartanburg County roads in the city that his grading scale developed in 2007 has deemed most in need of resurfacing.
“Over the past several years we have been able to advance the overall condition of our roadways through the programs that are offered by both Greenville and Spartanburg Counties together with the funding that Council provides as matching funds,” he reported.
The Greenville County Legislative Delegation annually provides funding for road maintenance and allows the city to match that funding to maximize the level of maintenance. Spartanburg County requests a list of city roads and assesses their condition based on their own rating system.
Approximately 84 miles of road surface cover the City of Greer, Holloman said. Since 2005, nearly 26 percent of those roads have been resurfaced.
“In addition to the roads that have been resurfaced during this time period, there are a number of subdivisions that have been constructed such that the roads are relatively new and have required no maintenance. Adding this to the total resurfacing, about 35 percent of the roads in inventory are in good shape,” he reported.
Holloman said roads typically require resurfacing every 20 to 26 years although maintenance, such as sealing cracks, is an ongoing task. The city’s Public Services Department, he added, is constantly working on the most cost-effective methods to administer regular maintenance.
He singled out six roads on his Greenville County maintenance list. Canteen Street and Tremont Avenue are currently included in a project through the GLDC to improve the roads with a specific width with curb and gutter drainage, so they would not be included on the repaving list to the county. Holloman also said four major downtown streets — Trade, School, Depot, and Victoria — will significantly impact activities in the central business district “unless some specific restrictive criteria are developed for performing the needed work.”
