Following the success of last October’s collection of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs, the Greer Police Department will offer another “Take It Back” day on Saturday, April 30.

Sgt. Chad Richardson said the Greer location was one of the busiest sites in the Upstate in October, collecting 80 pounds of prescription drugs that may have otherwise found their way into the water system or the hands of teens.

“Flushing prescription drugs down the toilet has become a problem because the drugs dissolve and may not be filtered by water treatment sites.  And it’s becoming an increasing problem that young people have access to these drugs,” Sgt. Richardson said. “We collect the drugs anonymously and then incinerate them to make sure they are not a problem for the environment or our young people."

Sgt. Richardson will be at the Walgreen’s located at 1232 W. Wade Hampton Blvd at the intersection of US 29 and Buncombe Road from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on April 30.  He added that all medications will be accepted with no questions asked.

GPD partners with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on the nationwide initiative aimed at collecting potentially dangerous prescription drugs from citizens.  For more information contact Sgt. Richardson at 968-7002.
