Healthy Communities Workshop
On May 12, Upstate Forever and the City of Greer will host “Creating Active, Healthy Communities through Placemaking,” a hands-on workshop that will explore how to restructure a city or town's built environment to support active, healthy lifestyles.

Public health officials are calling for land planning policies and regulations to support a built environment conducive to physical activity as an integral part of daily life. Pedestrian friendly, walkable communities have proven successful in addressing public health issues including obesity and chronic heart and respiratory diseases. Policy changes are necessary to accommodate this type of development across the Upstate.

Tom Low, Director of Town Planning, with DPZ Charlotte, will guide participants through diverse landscapes along a rural to urban continuum.  From suburban setting to new growth, brownfield, retrofit, and infill development, case studies will illustrate the art and science behind SmartCode / Form Based Code and the transect approach to creating healthy places
.

The rural to urban transect approach promotes diverse walkable communities, conservation of rural and agricultural lands and protection of natural resource areas. Planners, developers, builders, elected and appointed officials, architects, landscape architects, engineers, public health professionals and private citizens interested in land planning and community design are encouraged to participate.

"Creating Active, Healthy Communities through Placemaking" will be held from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Events Center at Greer City HallAdvance registration is required and the $15 registration fee includes lunch and workshop supplies.
