A new group of Upstate residents now have access to City of Greer news and information through AT&T U-verse, which began carrying the city’s government television channel as part of its programming in late June.
The government channel, which includes information on local activities, services, programs, policies, and emergency information, as well as original programming, is also available on Channel 15 to Charter Cable subscribers in the City of Greer.
“The channel is one of the best sources of both general and specific information about city services and activities. We believe U-verse subscribers will discover what Charter subscribers have known for years — that the channel is a tremendous source for knowledge at a glance,” Assistant City Administrator Mike Sell said. “It’s exciting to be able to expand the city’s coverage through AT&T U-verse.”
In addition to subscribers in the City of Greer, U-verse will make the channel available to all of its viewers in the Upstate market as part of its Public, Education, and Government (PEG) lineup. U-verse subscribers must tune to Channel 99 and follow instructions in order to view the City of Greer’s PEG channel or one of the other three government channels available to the local market: the City of Greenville, the City of Ashville, or Buncombe County (N.C.).
The city’s Information Technology Office began its work to split the city channel signal from Greer City Hall in 2010 and installed necessary hardware in early June. The duplicate signal, which is programmed by the city’s Communications Office, went live on U-verse on June 27.
AT&T introduced U-verse in 2008, using fiber optic technology and computer networking to marry digital TV, high-speed internet, and digital home phone service as a fully integrated experience. Home installation began locally in August of 2009.
