The City of Greer will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 16 in words, song and fellowship during its annual MLK Jr. Celebration Luncheon at Greer City Hall. The program begins at 11:30 a.m.
Now in its 22nd year, the luncheon will welcome South Carolina native and civil rights activist James Felder as keynote speaker for the 2023 event. Felder is a former member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, former head of the South Carolina Voter Education Project, executive vice president of Operation PUSH (now the Rainbow PUSH Coalition), executive director of the South Carolina conference of the NAACP and professor and chair of the Department of Business and Economics at Allen University.
Felder received an undergraduate degree from Clark Atlanta University and earned his Juris doctor from the Howard University School of Law. He holds a master of laws from Atlanta Law School and a doctorate of humane letters from the College of Charleston. He also served in the U.S. Army, where he was selected to head the casket team for the late President John F. Kennedy in November 1963.
MLK Jr. Celebration Luncheon includes musical performances, videos and a catered lunch in the Events Center at Greer City Hall. Organizers will also announce Samaritan Award winners who have positively impacted the community.
