The City of Greer Cultural Arts Program is participating in the Empty Bowls Project.
“Our ceramics teacher Martha Grattan came to use a while ago and said hey have you ever heard of the empty bowls project,” Cultural Arts Supervisor Robin Byouk said.
Byouk says the project is something that happens far beyond Greer.
“All around the world internationally ceramicists and potters make bowls that they donate and it goes to feel the hungry,” Byouk said.
But the initiative here has even deeper meaning.
“We had a ceramics instructor who passed away last year by the name of Gary Huntoon and he loved the empty bowls project. He was involved with it for many many years,” Byouk said.
And, the funds from the sales of the bowls will stay in the Greer community too.
“To keep it right here in Greer we’re going to give it to the after school and summer programs at Needmore and we want to help them help those who don’t have money to pay for snacks or food or lunch,” Byouk said.
Byouk says it was important to keep the money close to home.
“Everyone has a back story that you don’t know. You don’t know if the kids you’re teaching clay class to have food or they don’t have food,” Byouk said.
About 200 bowls have been created for the project. You can purchase one through the Greer Cultural Arts Website, and each bowl will comes with sponsored coupons.
“They have been created by our ceramics teacher Martha Grattan and many of her students and some of Gary h past students have donated bowls,” Byouk said.
