Domestic Violence

South Carolina consistently ranks in the top ten states for the highest domestic violence related deaths. That shocking fact led Greer Municipal Court to develop a specialized Domestic Violence Court with the goal of reducing recidivism by stopping the cycle of violence.

Focusing on the Problem

Domestic Violence Court is held the second Thursday of each month. This session is dedicated to domestic related matters only. The South Carolina Attorney General’s Office provides a prosecutor and a victim’s advocate for each session. During each session, there are counselors present to provide services to both the defendants and the victims.

Having these domestic cases separate from other court cases, allows the court more time to focus on these types of cases. It also allows these cases to be processed through court more efficiently. This often allows resolution within families to occur more quickly.

Domestic Violence Penalties

A Domestic Violence conviction may result in a fine of $1,000.00 to $2,500.00 plus court costs, up to 90 days in jail, or both.

Batterer’s Treatment Program may also be a part of the sentence of a person convicted of Domestic Violence.  This is a 26-week counseling program developed to stop the cycle of violence. If ordered to take this program, the court will give a referral to a provider approved by the Solicitor’s Office.
