Greer City Council unanimously approved first reading of the budget for next fiscal year.
At the May 27 City Council meeting, Mayor Rick Danner said the $59 million proposed budget is solid and has been vetted by department heads and city administration.
The budget proposal does not include a reduction in the city’s millage rate of 113 mills, but several Council members expressed an interest in reducing that rate – especially since increased revenue projections are coming to fruition.
A large portion of the city’s general fund budget goes to public safety, and the proposed budget includes requests for more police and fire staff as well as funds to expand the city’s Quick Response Vehicle program to 24 hours a day instead of 12.
The budget proposal also includes funds for a year-long city sesquicentennial celebration – 150 years of incorporation.
Council will take a deep dive into the budget at a workshop on June 3. In the meantime, city staff is looking at options that might achieve the goal of reducing the millage rate while still meeting high standards for public safety, city services, and quality of life.
