The Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport is celebrating the completion of a project that has been in the works since before the COVID pandemic.

The airport held a grand opening last week for the $97 million project that provides a consolidated rental car hub and a new parking garage that contains 750 public parking spaces and 750 ready-return rental car spaces. The public parking area is equipped with Park Assist technology that helps customers quickly locate available spaces.

GSP President and CEO, David Edwards, said the airport began working on designs for this project years before COVID hit. The airport wasn’t able to begin construction until after the pandemic. “It’s great to finally open this for the community, for our customers, and the rental car tenants and partners here at the airport,” Edwards said.

Prior to the opening of Parking Garage C, which is adjacent to the terminal building, the existing two parking garages would fill up several times during the week according to Edwards. “We didn’t have that kind of premium parking available on certain days,” Edwards said. “This will open that back up and will give us ample new public parking from the garage perspective.”

Edwards said the facility is going to be much more convenient for rental car customers, especially business travelers. “They don’t have to go to the counter directly,” Edwards said. “They can go directly to their vehicle, pick up that vehicle, exit the airport.”

Edwards is retiring at the end of this year. He said it’s exciting to get this project done before his departure. “To finally have this completed, open the doors for the customers, especially right around the holidays, is really a gift for me to be able to deliver that to the community,” Edwards said.
