Sunday afternoon update: The Greer Fire Department says the large brush fire near the intersection of Gap Creek and Skyline Roads is contained, but it will continue to burn for days. The SC Forestry Commission cut in a fire break to assist with the containment.

The Greer Fire Department is working to contain a large brush fire behind the Wood Memorial Park cemetery off Gap Creek and Skyline Roads.

Josh Holzheimer, Deputy Fire Chief of the City of Greer Fire Department, says no evacuations are necessary as of late Sunday morning, but first responders are asking people to avoid the area so they can focus on fighting the fire.

The Forestry Commission issued a statewide burning ban on Friday because of the increased risk of wildfires.

Deputy Chief Holzheimer says under the current conditions, small fires can get out of control quickly. Holzheimer says you can help keep our community safe by:

  • Avoiding outdoor burning

  • Properly disposing of cigarettes

  • Reporting any signs of smoke or fire quickly
