As Greer students are getting back into the groove of a new school year, we're taking stock of a great summer of activities that really hit the mark for our community.
Archery Camp may not be as well-known as some of the other City of Greer recreation programs, but it's been going strong for several years. The team from Upstate Archery Academy ran a camp for nine to 17 year-olds at City Stadium this summer.
The camp started as an indoor program at Victor Gym several years ago. These days, the four-day camp starts with safety and moves into the basics of shooting. Each day, campers work through a different curriculum and play archery games. On the last day of camp, competitive shooters from Upstate Archery Academy talk about the different types of equipment they use, and then the campers take part in a tournament.
"When you leave here, you will know how to shoot archery the rest of your life," says Shelley Williamson, one of the instructors and owners of Upstate Archery Academy.
Williamson says anyone can do archery, and many students continue to sharpen their skills well beyond summer camp. Williamson says she's taught students as young as five to as old as 80. She says archery is a very relaxing sport that gets you out of your head and focused on one thing.
Upstate Archery Academy runs programs year-round. The company puts on classes for kids and adults, organizes daytime outings, and hosts archery parties.
