The Greer Fire Department is joining agencies across the country in celebrating national Fire Prevention Week with education.

This year's Fire Prevention Week runs October 5 through 10, and the theme is, "Charge Into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging is a Superpower." It's all about teaching communities about the safe ways to charge devices powered by lithium-ion batteries. That could include your cell phone and other mobile devices.

Charging Safety Tips

  • Use the cords and chargers that come with your devices. Don't use cheap alternatives.

  • Always charge on a hard, flat surface and not on a soft surface.

  • Unplug your devices when they are fully charged.

  • Charge large items such as e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside.

  • Stop using your devices if they feel very hot, start to swell, smell strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.

  • Keep your devices within sight on an airplane.
