The fifth season art exhibit

A new exhibit is on display at the Greer Center for the Arts featuring work by artist in residence Christina Laurel.

"I work, especially with Japanese papers they have qualities they’re very much like fabric but there’s sturdy and so I make installations," Laurel said.

Laurel focuses on cutting small shapes from the paper and creating something bigger.

"I've had immersive installations where you can walk in and among my suspended cocoons," she said.

This, along with two-dimensional collages focused on nature motifs--something that has inspired this exhibit.

"I’ve been drawn to the Japanese aesthetic for a long time and i didn’t realize until recently that in Japan, they have five seasons," Laurel said.

Inspiring the name of the exhibit and the emotions behind it.

"Then I just started thinking a lot about how seasons represent many things and people’s lives and even now in my our career I feel like I’m entering a new season," Laurel said.

Laurel’s art is on display now…and a reception will be held at the Center for the Arts on Tuesday, August 29 starting at 6:00 p.m. where you will be able to view the pieces and speak with the artist.

"I often wish that I could walk into my own art show and look at my art for the first time with fresh eyes," Laurel said.
