9:11 endurance challenge trophies and medal

On Sunday, runners of all abilities will gather on West Poinsett Street to participate in a fairly new race to the City of Greer.

“This is an event that we created it’s technically an ultra, and ultra marathon, that lasts 9 hours and 12 minutes,” organizer Adamy Diaz said.

Organizer Adamy Diaz says the idea to honor heroes and victims of 9/11 came out of one of her other races.

“Originally in 2020 when we had to postpone the too slow for Boston marathon we did it in September,” Diaz said.

She crafted the 9:11 Endurance Challenge to have a meaning that is two-fold.

“Not only the endurance of the 9/11 itself but also the endurance of the runners and walkers and people who are participating in events like this,” Diaz said.

She especially likes to see people who come out to participate with a goal in mind.

“We had a military guy last year also he was in full gear came in carrying a backpack and his goal was to do a half marathon and that’s what he completed,” Diaz said.

This race, is meant for everyone.

“We want to accept people from all walks of life and all of the different things they want to do in terms of their endurance journey,” Diaz said.

And you can run or walk any distance you choose on the 1.3 mile loop.

“If you want to do a marathon a half marathon they want to just come and do 10 miles a 5k 10k,” Diaz said.

Registration is open through Friday and the race is on Sunday.
